The University of Tasmania was founded in 1890, making it Australia’s fourth oldest university, and a member of the elite group of sandstone universities. Its history actually dates back even further, to 1846 – Christ College, one of UTAS’s residential colleges, is the oldest tertiary institution in the country. The university is particularly well known for its marine, maritime and Antarctic research, with the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies leading the world in understanding the southernmost continent. Three main campuses are based in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie, while outposts are located in Sydney.
