Australia’s oldest university remains by many measures its most prestigious. Established in 1850, the University of Sydney was one of the first universities in the world to admit students based solely on merit. This saw it opening its doors to women on the same basis as men, and the spirit of meritocracy and egalitarianism continues to this day. The QS World University Rankings place USYD in the top five universities in the world for graduate employability, and the best in Australia. Also viewed as one of the most beautiful universities in the world, seven prime ministers and five Nobel Laureates are counted amongst the USYD alumni.
