An institution established as a college in 1951, and bequeathed with university status in 1965, the University of Newcastle plays host to approximately 37,000 students across six campuses: Newcastle (Callaghan campus), Central Coast (Ourimbah campus), Port Macquarie, the Newcastle CBD, Singapore and the Sydney CBD. UON is divided up into five faculties – Business and Law, Education and Arts, Engineering and Built Environment, Science, and Health – and is known as a pioneering institution, having been the first in Australia to implement the problem-based learning system and UMAT. UON also has a proud indigenous history, having graduated two-thirds of the nation’s indigenous doctors.
