Named after World War I general Sir John Monash, and established in 1958, Monash is a large institution that plays host to over 85,000 students. It has four campuses in Melbourne, one in Malaysia, and centres in Italy, India and China. Known for its research prowess, Monash is home to such major facilities as the Monash Science Technology Research and Innovation Precinct (STRIP) and the Australian Stem Cell Centre. It sits in the top five Australian universities in a number of rankings, and boasts a wealth of notable alumni (in the 2008 edition of Who’s Who in Australia, Monash graduates accounted for 1100 of the 13,200 biographies.)
