One of Australia’s verdant or ‘gumtree’ universities that were established next to native bushland in the 60s and 70s, Flinders is named after British navigator Matthew Flinders, who surveyed the South Australian coastline in the early 1800s. Opened by Queen Elizabeth in 1966, Flinders offers over 160 undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and is best known for its faculties of medicine and humanities. Students are kept up to date with campus goings-on through the Empire Times, whose editors and contributors have included director Martin Fabinyi, comedian Greig (HG Nelson) Pickhaver, and politician Kate Ellis.
