In response to an increased demand for higher education, La Trobe was established as one of Australia’s verdant or ‘gumtree’ universities in 1964, which were placed within or next to areas of native bushland. As a consequence La Trobe now boasts the largest university campus in the Southern Hemisphere – a 267 hectare expanse located in the Melbourne suburb of Bundoora, as well as campuses in the Melbourne CBD, Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura, Shepparton and Sydney. Named after Charles La Trobe, the first governor of Victoria, LTU is known for its focus on science, primary industries and arts and culture.
