(Wurli) is looking to find a Registered Nurse to join their multi-disciplinary team in Katherine as a Tackling Indigenous Smoking Coordinator.

What’s the role?
The Tackling Indigenous Smoking program is a part of the Wurli strategic plan and vision to develop and deliver a holistic approach to health across all areas of the organisation for the Katherine Community. The Tackling Indigenous Smoking Coordinator will be required to work in a collaborative manner across the Primary Health Service and Community Services sector of Wurli’s business to provide effective harm reduction, cessation and education regarding tobacco use to their people.

This role will be responsible for the fostering of a culture of no smoking across the organisation and the development and implementation of effective interventions and capacity building strategies in accordance with the priority health and wellbeing issues within the Katherine Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities as well as the staff of Wurli. The role will be pivotal in assisting Wurli address the health inequities related to tobacco use for their people and engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people at risk of marginalisation into a welcoming and non-threatening health intervention and wellbeing services.

With a population of around 11,000, Katherine is a modern, thriving regional centre. The population of the region is just over 24,000 people, of which 60% identify as Indigenous. Located 314 km from Darwin and 1180 km from Alice Springs, the town is situated on the banks of the Katherine River. Katherine has a sub-tropical climate, with distinct wet and dry seasons. The Katherine region also boasts magnificent Aboriginal rock art, Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park, the Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park and Elsey National Park. Historically, Katherine has always been important. To the local Aborigines, it was the point where the traditional lands of the Dagoman, Jawoyn, and Wardaman met, and consequently, the river and the nearby gorge were popular meeting places.
