Job Description Summary

The Animal Care Research Specialist will plan and conduct basic science experiments on feeding behaviors to meet research project objectives.

Job Description

The Animal Care Research Specialist is responsible for organizing, breeding, and maintaining unique rodent colonies for our studies investigating the neural control of energy balance. The successful candidate will be trained by PhD level staff on basic genetics, breeding skills, and colony care and management techniques. Duties include: Husbandry, breeding, weaning, colony organization, updating and maintaining paper and online records, sterilizing equipment and preparing laboratory samples.

These duties are expected to require 10-15 hrs/week, with opportunities for more hours/responsibilities possible in the future. Initial training will require time during the regular work week, but once independent, the animal care research specialist can create a flexible schedule.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Rodent colony management
  • Record keeping related to colonies
  • Aid research activities according to standard and specified procedures
  • Provide laboratory colony care assistance
  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory work area and adhere to established policies and procedures.
  • Qualifications:

    Bachelor’s Degree and 0-1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required
