The Opportunity:
WSP has opportunities for entry (T1) Level Soil Technicians to join our Australian Construction Materials Testing team. Initially this would be a 6 month casual contract, transitioning to a permanent position. The role is hands on and would suit a partially qualified (or qualified) tradesperson looking for a change in career.
After initial training in Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth (you can be based in any of these 3 cities) you would likely support our remote laboratories on a FIFO roster, typically working away from home for 2 to 3 weeks continuously with 1 to 2 weeks break between shifts. Penalty rates apply to long work days including weekends, making these positions financially rewarding with extended breaks away from work between shifts.

What you’ll do:
In this role you will assist the laboratory team with day to day and project tasks to deliver high quality laboratory results to clients. You will develop your skills and knowledge through a broad range of responsibilities which will include:
- Undertaking and assisting with routine field and laboratory tests on soil, aggregate, and rock and other materials in line with the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) standards
- Testing will include nuclear densometer gauge, compaction equipment, etc
- Maintaining, calibrating and setting up equipment for use in testing in line with NATA standards
- Providing support with the shipping, receiving, logging, handling, storage and disposal of samples
- Liaising with internal clients as required, with a focus on delivering against project deadlines

You will ideally possess the following:
- A team player with initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility
- Good communication skills and able to follow instructions
- Immediate start
- Construction Induction (white card)
- Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques or willingness to undertake
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
- Basic mathematical skills to at least year 10 Level
- Willingness to work away from home for 2 to 3 week periods, including weekends
- Manual drivers licence
- Commitment to working safely
All candidates will need to complete a pre-employment medical and Drug and Alcohol test successfully prior to commencement of the position. Ongoing D&A testing will apply to the position as a requirement of the sites you work on.
