The Role
The EL2 Principal Cyber Security Engineer (PCSE) is responsible for the provision of technical advice and analysis of complex systems, contributing to strategic vision, technical decisions, and solution selection to ensure delivery of fit-for-purpose cyber resilient systems and cyber security capabilities aligned to Defence requirements. They work closely with a broad range of stakeholders to guide the development of user requirements, technical specifications, cyber security engineering standards and practices, concept and solutions, system and network designs and commissioning plans, and ensure these are appropriately adhered to.
As the PCSE, you will possess significant knowledge and demonstrable experience in the application of foundational engineering disciplines and practices, contemporary technology and cyber security engineering paradigms, principles and technologies to design and deliver cyber resilient systems and cyber security capabilities. You will be highly competent in working collaboratively with a network key people across Defence to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. You will work with considerable independence and are accountable to plan, lead and manage very complex information security activities.
The additional payment is a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP) which enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the rate of salary otherwise payable under the Enterprise Agreement (EA) to some or all of the jobs within a critical occupation(s) or discipline within a workplace. Applicants engaged into a BDCP position must consider the following. BDCPs provide remuneration in addition to the Defence Enterprise Agreement (EA). This arrangement is subject to meeting eligibility criteria and is subject to annual review. Should your performance fall beyond requirements or the eligibility criteria not be met, your eligibility for the BDCP may be reviewed and ceased. It may also be ceased should you change positions or the requirement for the BDCP is no longer necessary, as determined by Defence. Should the BDCP be ceased you will be advised and your BDCP additional payment will cease.
About our Team
ICT Security Branch leads Defence in securing, assuring and defending Defence’s systems and networks to provide Defence with mission continuity in a contested cyber environment. We are multi-disciplined team consisting of APS, ADF, and contractors that work with all Groups and Services, other government agencies and international partners, to support the protection of Defence information system capabilities.
The Principle Cyber Security Engineer plays a strategic role within this mission to ensure that Defence has cyber resilient systems and cyber security capability that maintain Defence’s leading capability edge and ensuring that Defence can meet the cyber threat posed to it.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Demonstrated track record and professional history in the cyber security engineering of systems, solution and networks to deliver secure, trustworthy and cyber resilient ICT enabled capabilities.
- Highly developed knowledge and application of contemporary engineering processes, practices and standards, and cotemporary cyber security paradigms, such as Zero Trust.
- Proven leadership experience of multi-disciplinary teams, and a strong ability to drive effective collaboration across an organisation.
- Exceptional written and verbal communications skills, which enables you to break down technically complex language and communicate complex ICT structures to users, managers and executive board members of all levels of operational understanding.
- Detailed knowledge and experience in risk analysis relating to cyber security, and a clear understanding of relevant cyber security frameworks and policies relating to Australian government ICT systems.
- Extensive knowledge relating to cyber security standards, frameworks and policies, including national regulatory and legislative requirements.
- High level of business acumen and strong strategic thinking, conceptual and analytical skills, with demonstrable ability to cultivate strategic direction that is well aligned to an organisation’s context and priorities.
- Personal resilience and the ability to solve complex problems to effectively operate in a high tempo and dynamic environment with competing priorities.
