Laboratory Assistant – ASAP Laboratory

  • Part-time (30-38 hours) permanent position based in Mulgrave, Victoria

About the Role

Based at the ASAP Veterinary Laboratory in Mulgrave, we are seeking a laboratory assistant to join our dynamic team in our specialised genetic testing department in a Parttime to Fulltime capacity.

Reporting to the Specimen Reception Team Leader, your duties will include sorting, processing, and accessioning pathology specimens, and data entry. Other tasks may include operating laboratory equipment for DNA extraction and non-invasive prenatal screening test setup, equipment maintenance and pipette calibration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data entry, sorting, processing, and accessioning of pathology specimens
  • Packaging and sending of pathology specimens to referral laboratories, as per IATA requirements
  • Participate in the rostered operation of laboratory equipment
  • Collaborate with the scientific team to support test analysis
  • Perform equipment maintenance and pipette calibration as required
  • Specimen handling and processing including: receipt, triage and sorting of specimens, coding, pre-analytical processing, loading/unloading onto instruments (track), registration and data entry, and specimen transport to work areas
  • Accession of work area related information via computers (i.e printing print worklists, look up of previous specimens received).
  • Participation in trouble shooting and telephone enquiry functions (Duty CSR)
  • Administration tasks including addressing enquiries, photocopying and filing as well as general laboratory sorting and filing.
  • Assistance with internal courier functions and performance of courier runs

About you:

  • Previous laboratory experience is desirable
  • Qualification in laboratory techniques or pathology/general science-related field
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team with minimal supervision
  • You will thrive in a busy environment and can work in a fast-paced, multi-skilled laboratory
  • Commitment towards good customer service
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Previous experience working in a Pathology
  • Able to work on rotating roster including Saturdays
