CSIRO is at the forefront of proteomics as it is applied to agricultural and food applications. As part of the Applied Proteomics team, this role will contribute to a key capability servicing the whole of the Agriculture and Food Business Unit. The successful candidate will utilise state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and bioinformatics to characterise the proteome of a range of plant and animal samples. You will liaise with CSIRO collaborators spanning multiple sites, provide advice in sample preparation techniques, perform bioinformatics analyses, write reports and play a lead role in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations. Utilising your expertise in applied proteomics and analytical chemistry, you will identify new opportunities to apply the capabilities within the Applied Proteomics team across a range of impact areas. You will maintain, manage and help deploy the mass spectrometry facility and train staff/students in the fundamentals of mass spectrometry.

Your duties will include:

Work closely with experimentalists to apply proteomics and mass spectrometry to solve scientific questions/challenges.

Apply advanced proteomics workflows that are capable of protein identification (data-dependent acquisition); protein quantitation (multiple reaction monitoring, MRM); and/or the simultaneous quantitation of thousands of proteins enabling a systems biology view of differential protein expression (data-independent acquisition).

Use bioinformatics to identify and quantify proteins and define their role in biological pathways.

Incorporate novel approaches to scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for new, existing and further research.

Utilise data science strategies to analyse and evaluate data. Manage data curation, storage and data sharing in accordance with best practise guidelines.

Maintain and manage the mass spectrometry facility, including but not limited to basic maintenance (HPLC, MS), quality control analysis, instrument calibration and tuning, liaising with service engineers and application support scientists.

Produce high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals and for presentation at national and international conferences. Communicate research results to clients and the scientific community through oral and written reports and prepare documentation for patent applications (where relevant).

To be considered you will need:

A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field such as Chemistry, Biology, Proteomics or Protein Biochemistry.

Demonstrated experience in mass spectrometry, with expertise in proteomics desirable.

Demonstrated experience in protein chemistry.

Experience in data science and statistical analysis, coding and/or related analytical methods.

Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.

Proven ability to secure support for new research projects.

Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific content clearly and effectively.

The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out independent individual research, to achieve organisational goals.

Experience in the use of SCIEX mass spectrometry instrumentation, in the use of peak integration software (e.g. Skyline and/or MultiQuant), and in the analysis of data-independent acquisition (DIA) data (e.g. SWATH-MS) is desirable.
