Job Description

The Queensland Government Hydraulics Laboratory (QGHL) is a dedicated stand-alone 8-hectare site based in the northern Brisbane suburb of Deagon.

QGHL manages the storm tide and wave monitoring networks along the Queensland coastline; administers the Tweed Sand Bypassing Project; has been providing physical modelling services for industry and research for more than four decades; and provides technical support to other agencies on coastal processes and modelling and the associated impacts including disaster management.

This role will be an excellent opportunity to bring your highly regarded and extensive leadership and management skills to steer the centre’s strategic direction to provide services and projects that support government priorities.

You will:

• develop and maintain the high-level professional, scientific and technical expertise and skills of site personnel to anticipate and respond to current and emerging issues.

• develop and maintain linkages and partnerships with state and national agencies, national, international and research partners, industry representatives, funding agencies, educational institutions and community groups to ensure the ongoing relevance of the QGHL’s services and activities.

• foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations.

Some of the requirements of the position are:

• high-level leadership skills including the ability to set a vision, strategic programs and effectively manage groups to develop, coordinate and deliver a multidisciplinary projects portfolio.

• expert, contemporary knowledge and experience in coastal management that is relevant to the needs of government, industry and community organisations.

• the ability to successfully lead, initiate, implement and contribute to change and continuous improvement initiatives within the QGHL and the Science Division.

• handling complex issues and providing high-level strategic, technical and operational advice and recommendations to senior management.

• high-level communication and negotiation skills, your ability to develop and sustain relationships with a wide range of customers and partners, and professionally represent the department and its interests.

• knowledge of current and likely future issues, legislation and associated policy and program responses for the delivery of high-quality coastal engineering, monitoring and numerical and physical modelling services, and disaster management to Queensland Government.

You must provide evidence that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

To be appointed to a position, you must be an Australian citizen, have permanent residency status or a visa permitting you to work in Australia.

It is a mandatory requirement for the occupant of this position to hold an unrestricted manual driver’s licence. You will need to provide a copy of your driver’s licence, with the original sighted prior to engagement. Employees are required to drive government vehicles, including four-wheel drives as a part of their day-to-day and field work.
