Job Description

We are seeking a political reporter to join our team in Canberra and work on producing timely and insightful coverage of federal political developments, breaking stories and political features.

We are seeking a political reporter to join our team in Canberra and work on producing timely and insightful coverage of federal political developments, breaking stories and political features. 

In this role you will….

  • Write news stories, interviews and backgrounders to tight, rolling deadlines 
  • Write political features and analysis
  • Generate ideas, break original stories and undertake investigations
  • Engage with social media to both promote stories and uncover information
  • Play a role in multimedia coverage including audio and video content 
  • As a member of the politics team, share responsibility for regular weekend and out-of-hours working

    • You’ll bring….

  • Experience working in a digital news environment
  • The ability to produce high quality stories, news, comments and copy
  • Exceptional knowledge of and interest in Australian politics, current affairs and parliamentary processes 
  • Excellent political contacts 
  • Strong writing, communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues
  • Good news judgement and the capability to generate fresh ideas and angles 
  • A highly developed understanding of media law
  • Demonstrable track record of working in a fast-paced, high pressure environment, with tight deadlines
  • A passion for independent journalism and an understanding of our editorial code and values
