About This Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to focus their efforts on developing their expertise and emerging research profile as a Research-focused Academic in the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation at UQ.
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be responsible for leading a tissue culture and cryo-biotechnology program for development of micropropagation and cryopreservation protocols for critically endangered Myrtaceae species threatened by Myrtle Rust, as part of a collaborative ARC Linkage project. They will organise and conduct experiments, manage project administration and reporting, coordinate with industry partners and assist in the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
At this level it is expected that the incumbent will also contribute to service and engagement roles and activities.
Key responsibilities will include:
1. Research
Develop a research program to innovate tissue culture protocols for the endangered Myrtaceae species with industry and academic partners.
Optimise cryopreservation protocols to protect identified plant species to protect germplasm into the future.
Travel to industry partner locations/Myrtle Rust affected regions as and if needed for germplasm collection.
Communicate research findings at conferences, industry stakeholder meetings, peer-reviewed publications and reports to funding bodies.
Work with colleagues, postgraduates and industry stakeholders in the development of joint research projects.
Participate in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities.
Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.
Observe safe work place practices and comply with PC2 laboratory requirements.
2. Supervision and Researcher Development
Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).
Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.
Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.
3. Citizenship and Service
Demonstrate citizenship behaviours that align to the UQ values.
Shows leadership of self through collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the unit
Provide support to other academic positions and unit operations as needed during other team members absences.
Contribute to internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.
Collaborate in service activities external to the immediate organisation unit.
Begin to develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

About You
Completion or near completion of a PhD in the area of plant science, ideally with a focus or use of plant tissue culture and/or cryopreservation applications.
An emerging profile in research in the area of plant tissue culture and/or cryopreservation optimization and application.
Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.
Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining external research funding is desired.
Some experience in meaningful internal service roles and contributions towards external activities
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and communicate clearly, in addition to independently as required.
Evidence of completing work punctuality to achieve milestone requirements of funding.
Experience in plant tissue culture in the context of conservation; experience with Australian native plants would be highly regarded.
Experience in plant cryopreservation is highly desired.
Experience in plant physiology and microscopy very highly regarded.
An ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with academia and industry stakeholders.
Experience in management of multi-task projects.
Experience in working in PC2 certified laboratories and adherence to the certification requirements.
Open Australian drivers licence (type C)
What We Can Offer
This is a full-time (100%) fixed-term position for up to 2 years at Academic Level A.
The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $86,346.14 – $99,426.59 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $101,024.98 – $116,329.11 per annum.
