Who are we looking for?

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is seeking a Research Grants Specialist to join Office of Research Services, Research Portfolio, Academic Division.

QUT’s Office of Research Services is seeking a Research Grants Specialist with significant experience in research grant and fellowship schemes. The role works closely with researchers and other internal stakeholders, as well as a broad range of external funding agencies, both international and domestic, to provide strategic assistance and advice across research funding opportunities, grant and fellowship applications, and research contracts.

 About the Research Portfolio

The Research Portfolio provides high quality support and training and conducts compliance and reporting across a range of obligations at an organisational level in an environment of dynamic growth in cross institutional collaborations.

The Portfolio is comprised of five units including Research Strategy and Policy, Research Infrastructure, Sustainability Strategy, Office of Research Services and Office of Research Ethics and Integrity.

Research Infrastructure (RI) delivers coordinated University-wide research infrastructure capabilities through distinct research facilities. In collaboration with internal and external partners, the unit acquires, facilitates access to, develops, and manages world-class research infrastructure capabilities.

About the Office of Research Services

The Office of Research Services (ORS) works with QUT staff, students, collaborators, and partners to identify, attract and manage funding from competitive and commercial sources. The Office also manages the University’s research management platforms and coordinates internal and external research reporting. The Graduate Research Centre (GRC), in the Office of Research Services, provides support and advice to higher degree research (HDR) candidates and supervisors across the HDR lifecycle including admissions and enrolment, award and administration of scholarships, candidature management and thesis examination.

What you need to succeed

Your expertise and initiative, combined with your ability to work as an excellent team player will be vital to your success in this role.

You will demonstrate:

1.    Education, training and/or experience equivalent to postgraduate qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualifications with at least six (6) years’ experience in research administration, particularly pre-award research grant administration, at scale, in a university research office or similar environment.
2.    Demonstrated knowledge of the current national research funding environment, national policies and funding issues relating to research grants and contracts administration, including evidence of skills required to read and interpret large and complex policy documents.
3.    Evidence of excellent written communication skills including in correspondence with researchers and other members of the University as well as with external clients in contract negotiations, with funding agencies, and other relevant stakeholders
4.    Extensive experience in the assessment of grant applications and provision of advice to ensure the compliance, as well as improve the quality and increase the competitiveness of all submitted applications.
5.    Demonstrated knowledge of contractual issues relevant for research contracts, including intellectual property, and demonstrated experience in reviewing and negotiating complex contracts.
6.    Demonstrated high level oral and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with staff at all levels, to consult and negotiate with external clients on a range of sensitive and confidential issues, and to successfully deliver information and training to individuals and groups of various sizes.
7.    Demonstrated ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines working autonomously whilst maintaining good working relationships within a team setting.
8.    Evidence of well-developed digital literacy skills and demonstrated knowledge and understanding of relevant information systems and software related to the administration of research grant applications.
