Student Jobs at Hungry Jacks

Hungry Jacks

Hungry Jacks Job Application for Students

When Jack Cowin realised that someone already held the name ‘Burger King’ in Australia, he decided to name the franchise after a peckish version of himself. Since opening in 1971 Hungry Jack's has gone from strength to strength, and remains one of the top four fast food franchises in the country.

Best known for its burgers, Hungry Jack's offers a wide range of fast food, from breakfast grub to vegan delights.

Hungry Jack's, like most fast food chains, relies largely on a student work force to keep things running. Casual, temporary and part-time workers are always needed, which has seen the franchise develop into one of Australia’s largest student employers.

Hungry Jack's employer info

  • Size: One of Australia’s largest restaurant chains ($1 billion turnover in 2010.)
  • Number of locations: 420 restaurants.
  • Number of employees: ~19,000.

What casual positions do Hungry Jack's offer?

1. Crew Member

The allrounder of the bunch, a Hungry Jack’s crew member can be tasked with anything and everything - cooking, cleaning, serving customers, running the drive-thru and more. While no experience is required, a broad range of skills, like customer service, attention to detail and good time management are valuable.

2. Front Counter Attendant

The front counter attendant is the face of the franchise. Here you’ll need to efficiently and cheerily take customer orders, all while leaving a good impression. You’ll be interacting with hundreds of customers every day, making this a great role for the extroverts.

3. Kitchen Team Member

Cutting, dicing, grilling, frying, and sculpting their way to deliciousness, kitchen hands need to have an eye for detail and must be able to work well in a group. You’ll need to get familiar with the broad Hungry Jack’s product range, and you should be ready to work under pressure.

4. Drive-Thru Attendant

The drive-thru attendant plays the same role as the front counter attendant, it’s just that this time the customers will roll past you. Workers in this role need to be able to work calmly while maintaining a fast pace, all while delivering 5-star service.

5. Team Leader

The next step up the ladder from the roles listed above, the team leader is put in charge of one part of the restaurant, be it the kitchen, the drive-thru or the front of house. Previous experience is a must in this role, preferably within the four walls of Hungry Jacks. Communication, organisation and people management skills are also essential.

How do I get a job at Hungry Jack's?

Hungry Jack's tends to post open roles on its own careers site. Here you can browse vacancies by area, role and other filters.

Fast food is a pretty steady business - people always need a convenient and delicious feed - so Hungry Jack's doesn’t tend to have any peak hiring periods. The fact that so many of its workers are students does mean that vacancies can open up when school is in session, however.

What is the average pay for a Hungry Jack's casual worker?

According to PayScale, the average hourly pay at Hungry Jack's is $15.65 an hour. This low rate is due to the fact that the restaurant sees a high proportion of entry-level roles filled by young employees.

Hungry Jack's pays the award rate for most roles. This hourly rate fluctuates depending on a worker’s age, role, and whether it’s a casual or part-time position. A part-time 15-year-old fast food worker is currently paid $8.56 per hour, while a 21-year-old casual gets $26.76, for example.

You can calculate your award rate using the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Pay Calculator.
