Student Jobs at 7-Eleven

7-Eleven

7-Eleven Job Application for Students

This American franchise has made it big in Australia. While it’s still best known for its small CBD convenience stores, it enjoyed a major expansion in 2010 when it bought out Mobil’s remaining petrol stations.

Open long hours and offering entry-level work, 7-Eleven has always been a major employer of students. Casual and part-time roles are always available, thanks to the fact that there are almost 700 locations dotted around Australia, in every state and territory bar SA, Tasmania and the NT.

7-Eleven employer info

  • Number of locations: 690 stores.
  • Number of employees: ~10,000.

What casual positions do 7-Eleven offer?

1. Retail Assistant

Because convenience stores are small by design, the main entry-level position at 7-Eleven is quite a diverse and far-reaching role. You’ll be tasked with providing excellent customer service, handling cash and electronic transactions, heating and serving food while abiding by food safety guidelines, receiving and restocking goods, cleaning and organising shelves, and, as you’ll sometimes be the only person in the store, resolving potential conflicts. No experience or qualifications are necessary, but a willingness to work autonomously and late or early hours are a must.

2. Assistant Store Manager

The level above team member, the assistant store manager ultimately takes responsibility for ensuring that all the tasks listed above are done, and done well. They will plan the work roster, direct team members on which tasks take priority, and will be the next step up the chain for conflict resolution. Assistant store managers should be great communicators, and must be able to create a supportive, positive and safe environment for staff. This role does require experience, and obtaining it in a 7-Eleven is a big plus.

How do I get a job at 7-Eleven?

7-Eleven advertises open roles through its own careers site. You can search by job category, location and type, and can apply through the portal.

There are no peak retail periods for 7-Eleven, so there generally aren’t peak hiring periods either. Due to the chain’s size there are always new positions opening up however.

What is the average pay for a 7-Eleven casual worker?

According to PayScale, 7-Eleven employees get paid an average of $21.51 per hour. Because 7-Eleven employs plenty of students, and has stores that are open around the clock, this rate can vary greatly from worker to worker and shift to shift.

The difference can be stark. 7-Eleven pays the retail award rate for casual positions, so as of June 2020 a casual 15-year-old employee would be entitled to $12.04 per hour, while a 21-year-old in the same position would earn $26.76.

You can calculate your award rate using the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Pay Calculator.
